October Week 2 – 2026

North Conway Area Foliage Update — October 8, 2026

Western White Mountains & Franconia Notch
Early October regional reports estimate foliage at 90–100% of the way to peak, with reds, oranges, and yellows spreading across the hillsides. Franconia Notch and the Lincoln–Woodstock area offer excellent opportunities for scenic drives and foliage stops. Traveling through Route 112 or Route 3 after 10AM will likely mean traffic. Plan accordingly.

Northern White Mountains
Both Crawford Notch and Pinkham Notch are at peak for the holiday weekend. Golden yellows mixed with vibrant reds and oranges, will linger on creating impressive mountain views. A drive through Crawford Notch and into the northern communities like Gorham and Berlin offers lots opf fall color and plenty of seasonal scenery. Head into Evans Notch for less traffic.

Eastern White Mountains & Mount Washington Valley
North Conway and the surrounding Mount Washington Valley still have considerable color, but much of the foliage remains green. As you travel through North Conway on Route 16/302 you’ll notice that most of the Cranmore/ Black Cap and Rattlesnake mountain range are mostly green. This has been normal over the years, and this delay gives visitors more opportunities as October progresses.

Southern White Mountains
The southern region is estimated around 65% to peak, with color continuing to build across the area. Freedom, Tamworth, and Madison are exceptional this week and will remain through the holiday weekend!

Foliage hike: Black Cap or Kearsarge North — Friday/Sunday
This is shaping up as a particularly good hiking weekend for color. The extra elevation gives you a great chance to photograph color advancing through several vegetation zones without committing to an all-day Presidential hike.

⭐ Weekend Recommendation

Friday morning: Black Cap. Saturday afternoon: Attitash Oktoberfest.

For photography, consider an early-morning trip along the Kancamagus Highway.

One thing to watch: It is Columbus Day weekend, so expect heavy foliage traffic, especially around North Conway, the Kancamagus, and popular trailheads. Early starts will make a big difference.

These estimates reflect October 8 reports; conditions change daily and vary by elevation. Expect increasing traffic along the Kancamagus Highway and through the notches. Allow extra time and stop only in designated parking areas.
