The North Conway NH area has attracted skiers since Mount Cranmore opened for the1937-38 season. With the arrival of Hannes Schneider, known throughout Europe for his ski school and development of new skiing techniques, Mount Cranmore quickly became one of the most popular ski resorts in the East.
At the same time, Bill and Betty Whitney, of Black Mountain in Jackson NH, retrofitted the rope tow on the hill behind their inn with shovel handles from Sears and Roebuck. Skiers flocked to the area from Boston on snow trains that arrived in North Conway Village. Up to 4,000 would arrive for a one-day trip!
Fast forward to today … the North Conway NH area offers 7 alpine resorts and 6 XC resorts within 30 minutes and more within an hour! With over 1,600 skiable acres and 337 trails, it’s no wonder the North Conway NH area continues to finish in the TOP # SKI Towns year after year!
