September – Week 4 – 2025
As we wind down the final day of September, it’s becoming very clear that this season’s foliage is very inconsistent, and what may be dull and brownish looking in one area may be bright and vibrant just one mile away.
While there is no doubt that the prolonged dry spell has had an impact on the foliage, the mature trees and forests in the area still look fantastic. However, there has been a significant amount of early leaf drop throughout the reporting area.
Here is what we saw this past week …
The Conway area (see photos)
While some areas have a long way to go, other sections around the Conway area are coming in very well. The lower riverbed areas have experienced significant early leaf drop. Yet we have seen some very punchy areas of color still with lots of green left.
Bretton Woods
This area is dull so far with muted color and spots of faint color. Fortunately, a drive through is still well worthy as the upper elevations are showing more color.
East Conway, Fryeburg, Maine (see photos)
If you’re visiting the Fryeburg Fair you’ll be pleasantly surprised with color in this area. The farms and Saco River area are surrounded by mostly good color and by next week we’ll at or near peak, which is early. But again, lots of leaves already down.
Twin Mountain, Bethlehem
Excellent fall color, somewhat spotty with early leaf drop. Higher elevations look good, especially in the right light.
Whitefield, Randolf, Jefferson (see photos)
On Sunday, 9/28/25, we witnessed very spotty color and large areas of dull browns in the lower elevations. However, this area is absolutely beautiful no matter the conditions and always worth visiting. Surrounded partially by the Presidentials, the colors in the upper regions are very good.
Tamworth, Freedom, Chocorua
Lots of early leaf drop but fall colors are looking very good with lots to go. We’ll visit this area more thoroughly later this week
Kancamagus Highway
The scenic byway never disappoints, but catch it soon as leaf drop has been seen throughout the Route 122 area, from Lincoln to Conway. Its best to drive this road earlier in the mornings or later in the evenings.
