The Majestic welcomes Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz of Talking Heads for a special screening of Stop Making Sense, followed by an interview and Q&A moderated by music historian and Majestic mainstay, John Howell.
About Stop Making Sense :
Stop Making Sense, possibly the greatest concert film of all time, was directed by Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs). It captures the new wave band Talking Heads in performance at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles over three nights in December 1983. The film features David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison, alongside an electric ensemble of supporting musicians, and is renowned for its innovative cinematography, striking lighting design, and David Byrne’s unique stage production concept. It’s considered a groundbreaking and influential example of the concert film genre, featuring iconic performances of the band’s most memorable songs.
About the Artists :
Tina Weymouth is a pioneering bassist, producer, and musician best known as a founding member of Talking Heads and the funk-hip-hop group Tom Tom Club. With her innovative and funky basslines, Weymouth helped define the unique sound of Talking Heads and later achieved international success with Tom Tom Club. As a prominent female musician in a male-dominated era, she broke barriers and inspired countless women in music, leaving an enduring legacy through her versatile and boundary-pushing artistry.
Weymouth’s musical career began in the mid-1970s when she joined forces with Frantz and Byrne to form Talking Heads, playing a pivotal role in the band’s genre-bending sound that blended punk, funk, and new wave.
Chris Frantz is a renowned American musician and record producer, best known as the drummer and a founding member of Talking Heads. His partnership with bassist (and wife) Tina Weymouth formed the tight, rhythmic foundation that helped define the band’s distinctive sound, blending punk rock, funk, and world music.
After meeting at the Rhode Island School of Design in the early 1970s, Frantz, Weymouth, and David Byrne moved to New York, where they formed Talking Heads and quickly became a staple of the city’s burgeoning punk and new wave scene at clubs like CBGB. The band’s critical and commercial success led to their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
In addition to their work with Talking Heads, Frantz and Weymouth are co-founders of the popular Tom Tom Club. That band was formed in 1980 during a Talking Heads hiatus, and went on to record major hits like “Genius of Love”. Tom Tom Club’s funky, hip-hop-influenced tracks have been widely sampled by other artists, securing its legacy in modern music.
Frantz has lent his production talents to other artists and in 2020, released his memoir, Remain in Love: Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club, Tina, offering a personal perspective on his musical journey and enduring relationship with Weymouth.
